Photographer Chase Jarvis details his studio’s workflow

Gizmodo posted a video yesterday by Chase Jarvis detailing everything that goes into safeguarding all of his studio’s digital media, from the moment it’s captured to the moment they hand it off to a client. I’m not a huge fan of Chase and all the pomp and circumstance he constantly surrounds himself with (though I guess I can’t blame him and would love to be his Canon equivalent), I thought the video was really interesting and would be of benefit to anyone working in digital media.

Have a look, and remember above all else: backup, backup, backup, BACKUP.

It’s done!

After several late nights and revision after revision, I’ve finally finished the image for Sinister Moustache.

For a full run-down of the shoot, check my earlier post that includes a behind-the-scenes video. For the post production, I worked closely with my friend Jackie Wu who works at a motion graphics and design agency called Uber in London. Jackie is brilliant with 3D modeling and we collaborated online, working on different aspects of the project at the same time. It was a really interesting experience and really shows how great of a resource the Internet is for artists.

Jackie took basically just this image and came up with this model. Then, adding texture and working around Andy’s sketch and my direction, he ended up with this render:

I then used masking along with various other color overlays and adjustment layers to composite the robots into the scene. I added some depth-of-field effects with the lens blur and noise filters to arrive at the final image, which is a 475-megabyte, 94-layer (!) Photoshop document.

Voila!

There’s a perfect amount of space in the lower-right corner for any text or branding they might want to add. Overall, I’m really very pleased with the results and the whole process was quite a learning experience. I don’t think I’ve ever put this much into a single image before, but it’s nice to know now that I can do this sort of thing.

Looking forward to more collaborations and big shoots in the future!
